A Piece of Home in Hillcrest

A couple of nights ago we had dinner at Arrivederci Pizzeria which is the place where one can get the closest thing to an authentic Italian pizza in San Diego. What makes it so close to the real thing?
- The crust is not as thick as a brick -check ü
- The pie is not a grease receptacle -check ü
- The dough is not drowned in dried herb seasoned- faux tomato sauce -check ü
- The mozzarella tastes like it was not created in a chemistry lab -check ü
Seriously, though. This pizza is cooked at high temperatures in a wood fire oven which is exactly what gives it the typical thin crust, the dark color underneath and the right consistency.
Even the venue looks like an authentic Italian pizzeria, it’s small, cozy and features some typical décor from the wine racks to the wall tiles.
Besides the outdoor patio, and the friendly staff, perhaps what makes this place special is the fact that one can find – at any given time – Italian guests keeping up the traditional family pizza night, which is popular among younger generations in the old country. For last generation expatriates struck by homesick attacks, Arrivederci provides the food and the vibe to go along with for a quick Italian fix.
Pair any of the pizzas on the extensive menu with Moretti Beer, “la birra coi baffi” and you can’t go wrong. Birra Moretti has been brewed in italy since 1859. >more
